We had low key to no plans whatsoever for this Memorial Day. My hubby had an opportunity to work, and since it's been a full twelve months since full-time employment, he takes what opportunity presents itself. That left me and the kids to fend for ourselves for ten hours today, and it was a HOT one.
Big sister had an idea.
She volunteered to PAY for snow cones for everyone!
They had already eaten an early lunch, so I didn't see reason to argue.
The Redhead had grape with condensed milk.(I used to think the addition of condensed milk was disgusting, THEN I tried it....the adage holds true, "Don't knock it till...")
J had what appears to be sour grape--and a very SILLY face once I aimed the camera her way!
C tried an ice-cream stuffed cantaloupe flavor. Interesting!
And the Boy had a rainbow!
They spent the afternoon waiting for the shade to be over the pool, then coming in and eating everything but the kitchen sink. Must be summer!
Traditionally our plans for Memorial Day are not out of the ordinary, though it is heralded loudly as the first "official" weekend of summer. Particularly since my brother has been in the Army, it seems almost wrong on this day to dwell on festivity, food and fun activities when there ARE those who have given so much for us to even have this "holiday". We haven't had my brother with us on a Memorial Day weekend in YEARS...or a birthday, or Christmas, or Thanksgiving.
Our entire family has made sacrifices as a result of his service, and I am ashamed to say I never REALIZED before just how much our military families go endure for the rest of us!
We are thankful today for those who have served and those who are serving our country to maintain the light of freedom that America has been to the world for 237 years.
"Our fathers' God to Thee,
Author of liberty,
To Thee we sing.
Long may our land be bright,
With freedom's holy light,
Protect us by Thy might,
Great God our king."
~Samuel Francis Smith
The Lord bless you and keep you.
